Watson Racing Debuts Street-Legal Drag Racer at 2014 SEMA

Published: Mon Nov 03, 2014 by Marko P.  |  Source: Watson Racing, SVT Performance

Watson Racing unveiled a heavily modified Ford Mustang GT at this year's SEMA which has enough power to run a quarter mile in around 9.5 seconds while remaining street legal.

"Watson Racing has created the ultimate street/strip cruiser. Just the right blend of power and safety features as well as shedding significant unnecessary weight to make it a drag strip dominator, yet is still very comfortable and street legal," said John Phillips of Watson Racing.

"We decided to go with a pretty serious street/strip car. It was built with the intent of transitioning to a full race car at some point-with serious weight reduction and safety features, such as a welded in six-point roll bar as well as well as a proper lightweight tubular K-member front suspension," John explained. "The car as it sits should be a mid-9-second car but it will be forever evolving, pushing the limits of a street car."

Some of the components include a Ford Racing supercharger, Ford Racing cams, Ford Racing throttle-body and mass air meter, Tremec Magnum six-speed, a Dynotech one-piece driveshaft, Centerforce clutch, Optima battery, C&R radiator and many of Watson Racing's own parts, such as the driveshaft safety loop, intercooler tank, lightweight K-member, 10-gallon fuel cell, and tubular bumper mounts. In addition, the 2015 Ford Mustang GT rides on new Weld Racing 17-inch wheels and also has a customized interior with Sparco seats, custom upholstery and a quick-release Aim Motorsports GT 350 steering wheel.

Ford will showcase over a dozen custom Mustangs in its 20,000-square-foot booth at Las Vegas and has enlisted top builders for the job including Galpin Auto Sports, Petty's Garage, MRT, Watson Racing and many others.
